  • Overview

Improper medication disposal can lead to environmental contamination, pose hazards to wildlife, expose children, the elderly, and pets to potentially noxious substances, encourage drug diversion, and violate state and federal regulations. It is imperative that pharmacists and pharmacy technicians practicing in various settings be familiar with proper drug disposal. It is equally important to educate patients on how to safely dispose of their unwanted medications.

This monograph will discuss the scope of the problem of improper medication disposal, provide an overview of drug disposal methods, products and systems that can be utilized in outpatient and institutional practice settings, and discuss state and federal regulations that pertain to medication disposal.
